News from Amnesty.

Posted by jamie on Nov 20, 2009
Amnesty International sent us the following scary news.

A catastrophe is unfolding in the Niger Delta. Entire communities are devastated. The land they have lived on for generations is poisoned.

Behind this catastrophe is a UK company – Shell. But they’re hiding behind a smokescreen of denials and excuses. It’s time this stopped – it’s time Shell was called to account.

That’s why we’re working with local NGOs in the Niger Delta to monitor the situation and gather evidence of the ongoing human rights abuses.

Watch our “Welcome to Shell” video to find out more:

Welcome to Shell video

Please forward this video to your friends and family - we really need to step up the pressure on Shell and increase awareness of their working practices in the Niger Delta.

Government to remove restrictions on Parliament protests

Posted by jamie on Nov 19, 2009

A new government bill announced in yesterday’s Queen’s Speech will remove the need for protesters to get permission from police.  As it stands, you’d need a permit to protest about anything near to the Parliament buildings.

The Constitutional Reform and Governance Bill, which announced in yesterday’s Speech, cancels out the bit of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 which says people who want to protest in Parliament Square must first get permission from the police.

In her speech, the Queen said the planned legislation would be introduced before the next general election, which must take place by early June.

Belinda Pratten, head of policy at the NCVO, is among those who campaigned for the repeal, saying government attempts to limit protests “undermined democracy”.
